Who was the inventor?
James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny. What was the invention? It was a spindle that could hold many strings at once. When the spinning jenny created? A sixteen spindle spinning jenny was patented on July 12, 1770. Why was it created? It was created to increase efficiency in the textile production process. How did this invention help the textile industry? It helped the industry because it could hold several strings at once. Compared to alternate ways, it was the most efficient at the time. This decreased the amount of manual labor needed. |
In 1764, a British carpenter and weaver named James Hargreaves invented an improved Spinning Jenny, a hand-powered multiple spinning machine that was the first machine to improve upon the spinning wheel.
James Hargreaves' version of the Spinning Jenny had a single wheel that controlled eight spindles which created a weave that used eight threads. This enhancement of the spinning wheel required less time needed to create textiles. Prior to this advancement, it would take farmers a lot longer to refine the wool used for textiles. This not only opened up job opportunities for citizens, but helped the textile industry to boom in the south as well as the north. Factories opened up in the north and created job opportunities that expanded the textile industry. In the south, farmers could own the sheep used for textiles as well as refine the wool. |
